  • An air suspension system, also called auto suspension, is a kind of vehicle suspension powered by an air compressor. The air is pumped into a flexible bellow, generally made of textile-reinforced plastic material. This gives the vehicle its suspension. It can be either front or rear axle, depending on what kind of vehicle it is. The purpose of air suspension is to provide a safer drive for both the driver and the vehicle. Its basic principle is that the air being pumped under the vehicle can act as a cushion between the axle and the road surface, reducing the likelihood of damage to both the axle and the wheel.

There are three main components to air suspension: the pump, the bellows, and the suspension bellies. The pump is the actual device that applying air pressure to the suspension system. Usually, this is either a sealed-circuit pump or a rotary screw pump. Some pumping mechanisms use a centrifugal effect to apply air pressure.

The pump is fitted with a cylinder and piston rod that enables it to create a vacuum. The air suspension system then uses a compression hose and a piston to move the cylinder and rod in clockwise and anti-clockwise directions, respectively. When the wheels are at rest, they force the piston forward which applies force to the suspension. As the wheels move, the air in the suspension is forced through the piston, which raises the ride height. This mechanism allows the wheels to remain at their original position while driving.

There are two types of air suspension systems; non-leading and leading. Non-leading air suspension systems are more commonly used for normal vehicles such as passenger cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans. They work by maintaining a constant ride height regardless of the vehicle's direction of motion. They can provide excellent high-speed driving features. However, they are less reliable than leading air suspension systems because the non-leading systems are less able to resist lateral deformation, which affects both the ride and stability of the vehicle.

Leading air suspension systems provide better track control and enhanced acceleration and braking performance. They are made up of a variable-rate spring and coil system that can be used to enhance either ride height or weight distribution. The coils are fitted in between the wheels and the axle. The spring rate, typically by velocity, is adjusted to change the amount of damping created when the vehicle moves over a surface.

Many leading automobile manufacturers make use of air suspension in their high-performance vehicles. Many of these cars have been sporting high-performance engines, which are necessary to support high-performance parts such as air suspension. Therefore, when buying an automobile, make sure that the car engine and drivetrain are compatible with the parts used in the suspension. If you are looking for an upgrade for your current ride, you should check out leading brands such as APR, MRP, AC Delco, and Eibach. You can then find parts that will not only give you better ride quality but also increase the performance of your vehicle.
